Deshaun Watson’s signature Browns moment cost him dearly.
Watson will miss the rest of the season with a broken bone in his shoulder, the team announced Wednesday, after the quarterback led the Browns to an electric 33-31 comeback win over the Ravens on Sunday.
Watson, 28, took multiple hard hits in the game and also suffered a high-ankle sprain.
The Browns put Watson on season-ending injured reserve and announced he would be ready for the start of the 2024 season.
“Deshaun Watson underwent an MRI Monday on two injuries sustained on different plays in the first half of Sunday’s 33-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens,” the team’s statement read. “Imaging on his his left ankle revealed a high-ankle sprain. In addition, postgame, Deshaun notified our medical staff of a new discomfort in his right shoulder that he felt after a hit in the first half.
“An MRI of his right shoulder revealed a displaced fracture to the glenoid. Despite performing at a high level and finishing the game, after consultation… it has been determined that this injury will require to avoid further structural damage.”
Watson had been dealing with a shoulder sprain that had already cost him three games this season.
The initial injury was handled in curious fashion after the Browns’ 27-3 Week 3 win over the Titans.
Watson left little doubt he would play the next game, but ended up missing the next two weeks before returning against the Colts.
Watson would leave early in that game after a hard hit.
Watson is in the second year of a five-year, $230 million contract that is fully guaranteed after the Browns acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Texans.
Watson was suspended the first 11 games of last season and fined $5 million after he was accused of sexual misconduct by more than two dozen massage therapists.
He had mostly looked like a rusty shell of himself in his 12 games with the Browns, but he showed flashes of his star power against the Ravens on Sunday.
Watson completed all 14 of his pass attempts in the second half and led the team on scoring drives on all three possessions, including the game-winning field goal.
According to Bleacher Report, the Browns will turn to UCLA rookie Dorian-Thompson Robinson as the starting quarterback.
Thompson-Robinson started the first game after Watson’s previous injury, the fifth-round pick struggling mightily in a 28-3 loss to the Ravens.
Veteran P.J. Walker had filled in for Watson in the other two-plus games.
The Browns (6-3) are tied for second in the AFC North but even in the loss column with the Ravens, and own the sixth seed in the AFC playoffs.
